Emma González, one of the #NeverAgain student leaders, stood in silence for several minutes at the #MarchForOurLives podium in Washington, D.C., on March 24, in an emotional tribute to the 17 people who were fatally shot at her high school in #Parkland last month. González was among a slew of young speakers at the rally who advocated for #guncontrol and school safety. "In a little over six minutes, 17 of our friends were taken from us, 15 more were injured, and everyone—absolutely everyone in the Douglas community—was forever altered," González said. "Everyone who was there understands. Everyone who has been touched by the cold grip of gun violence understands. For us, long, tearful, chaotic hours in the scorching afternoon sun were spent not knowing. No one understood the extent of what had happened. No one could believe that there were bodies in that building waiting to be identified for over a day. No one knew that the people who were missing had stopped breathing long before any of us had even known that a code red had been called. No one could comprehend the devastating aftermath, or how far this would reach, or where this would go." Video source: AP

@davidmileshogg, a Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student, survivor of the Feb. 14 shooting in #Parkland and one of the leaders of the #NeverAgain movement, called on the #MarchForOurLives crowd in Washington on March 24 to focus on upcoming midterm elections. Hogg urged first-time voters to head to the polls and railed against lawmakers who accept donations from the National Rifle Association. "We are going to make this the voting issue. We are going to take this to every election, to every state and every city," he said. "When politicians send their thoughts and prayers with no action, we say, 'No more.' And to those politicians supported by the NRA, that allow the continued slaughter of our children and our future, I say get your résumés ready." Video source: AP

Among the speakers at the #MarchForOurLives rally in Washington, D.C., on March 24 was Naomi Wadler. The 11-year-old used her remarks to bring attention to African-American women and girls who are victims of gun violence. "I am here today to acknowledge and represent the African-American girls whose stories don’t make the front page of every national newspaper. These stories don’t lead on the evening news," Wadler said. "I represent the African-American women who are victims of gun violence, who are simply statistics, instead of vibrant, beautiful girls, full of potential." Wadler helped organize a walkout at her school, George Mason Elementary School, in Alexandria, Va., where she honored the 17 victims who were killed in the #Parkland shooting and Courtlin Arrington, a black teenager who was recently shot and killed in her Alabama high school. Her walkout lasted 18 minutes, one for each victim. Video source: AP

Hundreds of thousands of protesters, outraged by a recent massacre at a South Florida school and energized by the students who survived, thronged in streets across the globe in protests today, demanding action against gun violence in their most ambitious show of strength yet. The student leaders who organized the events, many of them sharp-tongued and defiant in the face of politicians and gun lobbyists, have kept attention on the issue in a time of renewed political activism on the left, as they helped lead a national school walkout and pushed state officials in Florida to enact gun legislation. @victorblue photographed one young New York City protester who was attending the march with his grandmother.
